Those events, and how you felt about yourself as a consequence, were photographed by your child’s, sponge-like, mind.  After that, they settled into your subconscious mind where they remain to the present day as your key reference points for how you behave and view yourself now, as an grown up.</p>
<p>In effect, the image that you have of yourself is not real – it is the result of what others did for you or to you during your childhood.  And, given that psychological research has proven that the normal adult tends to dwell on the negative instead of the positive, if you believe yourself to be suffering from low self esteem your subconscious mind is simply playing tricks on you.   In other words,  your own personal development depends upon you, really, getting real.  You’ll have to dig deep to rediscover the real you, beyond the resident thoughts that have given you an unreal impression of yourself and your true capabilities.</p>
<p>But digging deep doesn’t require major self-analysis – it doesn’t require you to pour over the events of a past long gone – after all, these are events, irrelevant to the present, to which you should stop paying attention.  On the contrary, you need to pay attention to what’s real,  today – the present moment, the here and now where life is lived.  If you don’t, you’re going to miss the only show in town, your life will slowly drift away.  It is in the present moment that you find reality – and it is in the calm of a mind that is no longer obsessed with old snapshots that you will find the real you.</p>
<p>The real you is not the person with the perceived weaknesses or, indeed, perceived strengths, that you thought were you.   You don’t need self improvement because the real you has an inner power that, when applied in the here and now, can achieve anything your heart desires.  As we’ve already said, you come to know the real you in the peace and quiet of a calm, clear, focused mind.  This focus is achieved by coming to your senses – by using all five senses to fully experience and appreciate the present moment, free from the filter of useless resident thought that has, up to now, given you no more than an incorrect impression of the present moment.   Therefore, when it comes to building self esteem, you really do need to get real in the only place that you’ll find reality – here and now.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="KonaBody"><p>I have been working in the personal development field for more than fifteen years and, to be honest, a get somewhat peed off when I see people, who are a danger to themselves, suddenly announcing that they’ve become a life coach because they completed a weekend course or get some half-assed accreditation.  Life coaching is a deadly serious business.   The coach is well placed to mess with client’s minds – and some of them do just that with awful results.  Their clients ‘follow their heart’ – a phrase that I’ve heard more than once – or people ‘go with the flow’ – another choice phrase.   But I often find myself in the position of having to help someone pick up the pieces of their lives having followed this half-baked advice.</p>
<p>I deliver a two-day personal development program – I’ve been at it since 1996 – and I explain to attendees that they’ve been provided with all the tools that are required to do whatever they want to do with their lives, whether that’s get rich quick, find their ‘soul-mate’ (whatever that means!) or simply find happiness.   However, the problem with most people is that they’d like someone to take them by the hand.   As a child, your parents led you by the hand – your teachers did the same, at least metaphorically.   Now that you’re older, you need to grow up.   It’s time to be responsible for yourself – you’re the only one who can.  It’s time to stop depending on the supports provided by anyone else and start  taking action for yourself – that’s what self help and self improvement mean.</p>
<p>You need to understand that the only person who can get inside your head is you.   And, more importantly, you’ve got to understand that, until you get inside your head and take charge, nothing’s going to change for you .   Over seven decades of research in from field of psychology tells us that the normal mind controls the normal person and that this normal mind is tortured by the ghosts of our formative years.   Neuro-psychological research also tells us that, when we assume control of our minds, we enter what successful people call the ‘peak performance zone’ and transform our lives.  But only you can do that.</p>
<p>You’ve got to tame your wild mind.   Your normal mind is wild because, currently, it’s a law unto itself.  Your mind is consumed with your past and worried about your future – and you’re stuck, helpless, in the middle.  You’ve got to grab the levers of power – let your mind know who’s boss.   Teach your mind to focus on the present – the bit that your mind won’t focus on at all – the time and place that you actually live, where risks are taken, great journeys are embarked upon.</p>
<p>So, having read these few words, take time out to, quite literally, smell the roses.   Close your eyes, experience the sounds of the real world, the smells of now, the rise and fall of each breath that you take – the reality of the moment.   For, if you don’t come to your senses, life will stay put.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="KonaBody"><p>Are you an avid reader of self help books?  Because  there are millions of people who are constantly reading, forever learning, forever searching, deepening their understanding not reading that changes your life, doing changes your life.</p>
<p>Continually reading self help books is much like collecting a pile of holiday brochures and travel guides for some beautiful place that you’ve no intention of visiting!  You’ve poured over the lovely pictures, read all the advice, imagined yourself relaxing on that beautiful white sandy beach, immersed yourself in the idea of having arrived.  But, then, you’ve never got around to buying the ticket.  What’s my point?  Reading about how to achieve the life that you really want and doing something about it are two completely different things.  Reading all those feel-good stories about how others have changed their minds and, as a consequence, changed their lives, will give you that warm feeling inside.  But tomorrow morning, when you drag yourself out of bed for another day of ‘not-too-bad’, what has changed?  Nothing!  When you’re confronted with another day of hassle, anxiety, financial shortage or battered self-confidence, what good will all the books have done you?  If anything, you’ll be even more restless and more disillusioned than you were at the outset.</p>
<p>Reading, intellectualizing and understanding what it takes to change your life will change nothing in your life until you put your learning into everyday practice.  And therein lies the problem for most normal people – they’re afraid to take what they perceive as some really risky leap of faith.</p>
<p>If you’ve been lucky enough to come across a self help book that has step-by-step tips on how to change your life (and they’re few and far between – most self help books are just ‘feel-good books’) then you must know by now that there is no leap of faith required.  All you need to take is take  simple steps each day that shake you out of the mindlessness in which the vast majority of normal people are only existing.</p>
<p>To change your life, you have to change the way you’re living the life that you have at present.   You start small – even by simply changing your morning routine – because small things shock your subconscious mind out of its comfort zone.  And once out you will start to realize that absolutely everything in your life can be done differently.  When this realization dawns upon you, you’re going to find yourself in a completely different place – where action that was otherwise unthinkable suddenly become the logical thing to do.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="KonaBody"><p>Some time ago, in the course of one of my Personal Development Workshops, I mentioned that, most of the time, if you ask someone how they’re doing, the reply you’ll get is “not so bad”!   The second morning of the workshop, one of the group told us that, on his way to the venue, he was listening to the radio.  Half a dozen people had called the station for a quiz and, in every case, when the host asked the caller how they were this morning, their reply was “not too bad” – without exception!   And although I believed that that kind of fed-up response was typically Irish – but I’ve subsequently discovered that that’s  not so.   My French friends will tell you that they’re ‘pas mal’, the British respond in much the same vein.   And even my American clients have explained to me that, when they reply that they’re great, they’re simply trying to convince themselves!</p>
<p>A superficial scan of seventy years of research in psychology will confirm that not so bad is just about as good as it gets!   Ordinary people, to quote the celebrated spiritualist Tony deMello, sleepwalk their way through life never realizing that, to live life to the full, all they’d have to do is wake up!   Sadly, the ordinary mind exists on auto-pilot – the research confirms that, using our psychological capability of automaticity, we pay almost no attention to anything that’s going on.  And, in paying no attention to our day as it unfolds, we totally miss out on the opportunities of life that are before our very eyes.</p>
<p>Now, if you’re not so bad right now, then that’s not good enough!   Why would you go through life in a comfort zone that has you, in fact, not uncomfortable enough to do something to change your life?   Do you have to experience a catastrophe or rock-bottom to wake up?  All the evidence suggests that that is the case.  The personal development expert, Ekhart Tolle, had to suffer something like a nervous breakdown, ended up destitute on a park bench, before it dawned on him that he needed to wake up!</p>
<p>Don’t wait for that to happen.  And don’t yourself down.  Don’t let life pass you by while you whine about how horrible your job is, while you get hassled over money, while you get hyper over the peaks and troughs of what you call your life.   You feel the way you feel because you’ve created your not too bad life the way it is.   You can change your life – you can transform it.   All you have to do is wake up.</p>
<p>So, what does this waking up involve?    Pay attention to, focus on what’s real, not the stuff that’s going through your head and making your existence routine, mundane and unfulfilling.   Open your eyes, see the reality in front of you.  Come to your senses, smell the roses.  God gave you five senses – isn’t it about time that you started paying attention to them?</p>

<p>At the outset, you’ve got to realize that being focused doesn’t happen naturally.   The adult mind is either thinking about the past or anxious about the future.   The worry you already know about – research shows how the majority of people are worried about their finances, worried about their kids, worried about their business, worried about growing old.   For each stage of life we’ll always find a set of worries.  And all this worry is focused on things that haven’t happened yet – and, more importantly, things that we really don’t want to happen!   What type of idiot would waste their energy on stuff that they don’t want to happen?   A normal idiot!</p>
<p>Even though we all know about worry, we’re generally not conscious of the fact that our subconscious mind is obsessed with the past and it’s as a result of the past that we end up worrying about what we don’t want to happen!    We learned the stuff that we don’t like about ourselves when we were young – and our subconscious mind keeps on playing the same old broken record.   And you don’t realize that this is going on, so you’ve never been able to focus on doing something about it.</p>
<p>What you do need to realize is that you don’t have to do anything about it if you train yourself to focus your mind on the here and now.   Yeah, that’s what focus is – a here and now thing.   This is where you spend each day, this is when you could be your very best if you could just focus, the here and now the only place that you can be, you have no choice.   The choice you do have is whether you’ll bother to turn up for your life or not.   If you do decide to turn up, everything changes.</p>
<p>OK then, how do you focus?   Well, here’s your first training session, right here, right now.  Sit down somewhere where you won’t be disturbed for five minutes.  When you’re comfortable, close your eyes and just listen.  You’re mind will try to distract you but, when this happens, just grab onto the next sound that comes your way.   When you try something this simple, you teach your mind to pay attention to what is actually happening in just this moment – and that’s focus.</p>
<p>Even if you just started with five minutes of sitting down and hearing, you’ll discover something very important – the real world has nothing to do with the nonsense in your head that you’ve been paying all your attention to.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="KonaBody"><p>Most people want more out of life.  This is not to say that you’re unhappy with what you have.  In fact, the secret to happiness is wanting what you have.  But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t want to scale higher heights of happiness because there is no standing still in life.</p>
<p>But there are people who are completely unhappy with their lot in life – the majority of people contend that they are unhappy in the work that they do, a staggering number of people worry about not having enough money and then there are others who are just downright unhappy with who they are.</p>
<p>What you need to understand is that you will nothing out of life by craving or by being unhappy with things as they stand.  The one thing that stops you getting something different out of life is &#8211; and this is kind of obvious &#8211; that you continue doing everything the same.  Keep doing the same things and nothing will change.  If you want change in your life, you’re going to have to do actually change your life!</p>
<p>But what?  Like all great journeys, changing your life starts with the first step.  A little step will do for starters because you’re going to have to gradually recondition your mind – to get yourself used to the idea that, in everything that you do in life, you have a choice to do something new, something different.  One of the most powerful exercises that I suggest to my personal development clients is that they use the very routine that has anchored to their current life to dismantle the habitual, repetitive patterns of behaviour that have so constrained them, their perspective of life and the boundless possibilities that life holds for them.</p>
<p>I suggest the same powerful yet simple tip to you.  Break routine by using your routine.  Every morning, you are presented with a long list of routine tasks that you’ve done in a routine way every day of your adult life.  If you were to brush your teeth with the hand with which you do not habitually brush your teeth, you will achieve two, potentially life-changing, milestones.  Firstly, you will have awoken yourself to the fact that, in everything that you do in your life, you can exercise choice.   This awareness will enable you break every single destructive habit that has been holding you back in your life.  Secondly, because you’ll be brushing your teeth differently, you’ll have to pay more attention to the task.  The super-successful call this ‘focus’.  Focus simply means paying attention – not to what you want out of life, but to what you’re doing right now.</p>
